Body / Liposuction

Liposuction, sometimes referred to as ‘lipo’, is a cosmetic procedure that helps to define and sculpt the body through the surgical removal of excess fat in certain areas.

What is Liposuction?

One of the most common cosmetic procedures, liposuction is a surgical treatment to remove small, stubborn areas of fat that cannot be easily sculpted through traditional methods of diet and exercise. It is important to recognise that liposuction is not used as a treatment for weight loss; instead it is a way of achieving a more defined and balanced physique in both men and women.

Traditional liposuction involves sucking out this excess fat through a tube, reducing the overall number of fat cells in an area of the body. It is generally performed under general anaesthetic, although an epidural anaesthetic may be used for liposuction on lower parts of the body.

How does Liposuction Work?

Usually performed under general anaesthetic, liposuction creates a more sculpted and defined look in certain areas by removing stubborn, unwanted fat. It does not treat cellulite, nor can it treat obesity or other weight-related issues, as the amount of fat cells that can be removed from one area is limited.

To begin, your surgeon will use high-frequency vibrations or a weak laser pulse to begin to break up fat cells in the treatment area. This makes the removal process easier. Next, a suction tube is inserted into the treatment area; using a vacuum, fet cells are loosened and removed.

Provided a patient does not gain a significant amount of weight after treatment, the results of liposuction will be permanent.

Who Can Benefit from Liposuctions?

Liposuction is an efficient way to remove unwanted fat cells in areas which cannot be targeted by a healthy diet and exercise plan. Because of this, it is beneficial for anyone looking to subtly sculpt certain areas for a more defined look. Due to the limited nature of liposuction – only a limited amount of fat cells can be removed for each area – it is not suited for patients looking for dramatic fat removal.

Areas that are best suited for liposuction include:

  • Abdomen
  • Ankles
  • Back
  • Buttocks
  • Chest
  • Chin
  • Hips
  • Inner knees
  • Love handles
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms

The Advantages of Liposuction

There is a range of potential benefits for those choosing the Liposuction treatment

Quick, Effective and Permanent Results

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure, which means it involves anesthesia (either general or local), and a considerable amount of downtime due to the invasive nature of the surgery. However, results are quick, effective and permanent.

Sculpt Certain Areas of the Body

It is advantageous in targeting areas that traditional weight loss methods like diet and exercise can’t. Because of this, it is an excellent option for those looking to subtly and efficiently sculpt certain areas of the body.

Certain Medical Purposes

As well as being a cosmetic treatment, liposuction can be used for certain medical purposes.
It is a treatment for:

Lymphodema: a long-term condition that causes swelling in the arms and legs
Lipoedema: a condition that causes a build-up of fat in the legs, buttocks and thighs
